Weight Loss Drug Examples
Obesity or being overweight is a serious health issue affecting about 70% of American adults and often associated with the leading causes of death such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. However, between 5 and 10% of body weight can be reduced through diet and exercise, but that’s barely enough.
Hence, the need to complement diet and exercise with prescription medicines for optimum results.
Top 7 Weight Loss Drug Examples
Here are the top seven weight loss drug examples you should know:
Semaglutide is one of the very few weight loss medications approved for use in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration in 2017. It’s a once-weekly medication for chronic weight management used by adults who have a body mass index (BMI) that is greater than or equal to 30 mg/kg² alone or 27 mg/kg² with at least one weight-related condition, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes. It’s recommended for use with a healthy diet and exercise.
Ozempic is an injectable prescription medicine that can be taken once a week, along with diet and exercise, to lower your blood sugar if you have type 2 diabetes. It lowers your risk of major cardiovascular events such as stroke, heart attack, or even death if you have a known heart disease. The drug isn’t made for weight loss per se, but it may help you lose some weight.
Wegovy is a 2.4 mg once weekly injection approved by the FDA for chronic weight management in obese or overweight adults who have at least one weight-related condition such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or type 2 diabetes. It’s meant for use in addition to increased physical activity and a diet low in calories.
Rybelsus is a once-daily 7 mg or 14 mg tablet for the reduction of blood sugar and A1C when combined with diet and exercise. It may help you lose weight and doesn’t increase your risk of cardiovascular events such as a heart attack, stroke, or death. It’s recommended for use by adults with type 2 diabetes.
Liraglutide is a prescription medication used for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes, as well as chronic weight management. It improves control of blood glucose, lowers the risk of cardiovascular events or stroke, and can be used together with diet and exercise for chronic weight management in adults.
Victoza is a once-daily noninsulin medicine used with diet and exercise to lower blood sugar and A1C in adults and children aged 10 years and older who have type 2 diabetes. It reduces the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attack, stroke, or death for adults with type 2 diabetes and known heart disease.
Saxenda is an injectable prescription medicine to help adults and teens lose weight and keep it off. It’s meant for adults who have excess weight (BMI ≥27) and weight-related medical problems or obesity (BMI ≥30) as well as teens aged 12 to 15 years who have a body weight greater than 132 pounds (60 kg) and obesity. It’s recommended for use with increased physical activity and a low-calorie meal plan.
Semaglutide, Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus, Liraglutide, Victoza, and Saxenda are the weight loss drug examples you should know. However, you shouldn’t take these medications without a doctor’s prescription.
